Guest guest
Wednesday October 3, 2007-The Star MYT 5:29:06 PM Deadly chemical cause of fish deaths By SIRA HABIBU ALOR STAR: The chemical used to poison 600 fish at Underwater World Langkawi (UWL) recently is deadly, state Fisheries Department director Sani Mohd Isa said. Preliminary investigations showed that the samples collected a week ago from the affected tanks were still deadly. " Tests carried out at the quarantine unit showed that fish could not survive when they came into contact with the chemical contained in the water sample collected from the affected tanks. " The chemical also had a strong petroleum smell, " he said when contacted on Wednesday. Fish at UWL died last Monday. The Department of Environment (DOE) had cautioned UWL against draining the affected water weighing more than 70 tonnes until further notice. Langkawi Department of Environment branch chief Azlan Hamzah said the contaminated water could not be disposed until after the toxicity test result was known. " We will then advice UWL how best to dispose of the contaminated water. " We have to take extreme caution because we do not know the impact of the toxic matter to humans, other life forms, and the environment. " We can only advise on the mode of disposal after verifying the type of toxic material and quantity, " he said. If the concentration of toxic material was very high, the contaminated water would be transported to a water treatment plant, he said. Langkawi OCPD Supt Mohd Ali Jamaluddin said police had yet to get any leads on the case. " We are still investigating. We are hoping those with information will contact us as soon as possible. Confidentiality is assured, " he added.
