Guest guest
Cook jailed for killing kitten October 04 2007 News from Deutsche Presse Agentur Hong Kong - A Hong Kong school cook was jailed Thursday for 21 days for the killing of a 10-day-old kitten that he threw repeatedly onto the ground. Chan Wah-chiu, 50, admitted animal cruelty after a court heard he hurled the kitten onto a pavement three times when it nipped his hand as he tried to pick it up, government-run radio station RTHK reported. As well as his jail term, Chan was fined 5,000 Hong Kong dollars (644 US dollars) for the offence in April last year as a magistrate told him it was clear that his actions were deliberate, RTHK said. The Hong Kong government last year increased the penalty for acts of animal cruelty from a maximum jail term of six months and a 600-US-dollar fine to three years in prison and a 25,600-US-dollar fine. A spokeswoman for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said she was satisfied with the jail term but felt that the financial penalty should have been greater. http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/118667.html Sick of deleting your inbox? 7 Mail has free unlimited storage. http://au.docs./mail/unlimitedstorage.html

Guest guest
Hong Kong Standard (^¤åªê³ø ) P04 | Top News | By Diana Lee and Nickkita Lau 2007-10-05 Never again, says - sorry kitten killer Two celebrity cat lovers have expressed dismay at the cruel death of a kitten but said a 21-day jail term and HK$5,000 fine for its killer are sufficient to raise awareness of animal abuse. Their comments yesterday came after a 48-year-old cook admitted repeatedly hurling a kitten to the ground, and then throwing it into a dustbin. Since Chan Wah-chiu, pictured, had been in custody for three weeks prior to sentencing, he was released. Chan was with a catering company contracted to Bishop Hall Jubilee School in Kowloon Tong at the time. He was sacked after the incident. ``You killed an animal on purpose and it was an meaningless act,'' Principal Magistrate Ernest Lin Kam-hung told Chan, who said the cat had bit him. ``I deserved the sentence and I will not do such a thing again,'' Chan said outside Lai Chi Kok Reception Center. On April 14, a bank employee walking past the school saw Chan lift the kitten and then hurl it violently to the ground three times. She informed the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, whose inspector found the cat. It died soon after. The act was captured on the school's close-circuit television camera. Artist Pauline Yam Po-lam, a Harvard graduate who owns two cats, told The Standard she hoped Chan would mend his ways. ``If he can hurt a helpless animal like this, who knows what else he can do?'' ``The judge could not give him a longer sentence. After all, he did not murder a human being. I do not know if the sentence is too light, but I personally don't think it's too harsh either.'' Singer Joey Yung Cho-yee, who once had seven cats at the same time, said through her manager Mani Fok Man-hei: ``I can't understand why someone would do this to an animal'' Yung agreed the jail term is short but said it should be enough to raise awareness of animal abuse. Animal Earth convenor David Wong Kai-yan said the prison term was ``just 1.92 percent of the maximum penalty and the fine was just 2.5 percent of what the court could have imposed.'' The current maximum penalty is three years in jail and a fine of HK$200,000.
