Guest guest
Elephant day celebrations at Bangalore - 6th October, 2007 As part of the World Wildlife week celebrations organized by the Karnatka forest department, world elephant day celebrations at Bannergatta Biological Park commenced with hundreds of people gathering at Bannergatta early in the morning. Kids, young and the old, infact everyone for whom the elephant was more than a mere animal were present. A small rally highlighted the event with information about elephants being announced hoping to educate the masses in the rally as well as the onlookers. Mr. Markandiah, the Executive Director to the park, led from the front. Once back at the park, the audience were treated with a lovely piece of documentary called " Haathi " (in Hindi meaning Elephant) followed by lunch for all those present. Post noon, fun activities were organised for the children which included quiz and other education-through-fun events. Children also gathered around the elephant paddock to learn first hand from the mahouts and other prominent wildlife experts about the gentle giants. Many well known wildlife researchers, experts and enthusiasts were present at the venue. Amongst them were Mrs. Suparna Ganguly, Mrs. Savitha Nagabhushan, Mr. Vijay, Mr. Harish and many others. What everyone took home in the evening from Bannergatta on this day was an abundance of knowledge about elephants, a renewed urge to save the elephants in the wild and end/ fight against future captivity and captivity related entertainment; a priceless gift on the day of the Ganesh, for our gentle elephants and us. Thanks, Pablo. -- WOCON: http://groups.google.co.inwocon
