Please send me the related documents and reports and research study regarding max. temperature of survival of elephant. > It is very important it will be a grat help for Wild Life because the Court is going to decide decision on this on next hearing in this matter. > > > TIGER HOUSE > DR.M.S.KACHHAWA ADVOCATE
Guest guest
1stly, who determines whether it is permissible (acceptable) or not to have elephants sent on cruel forms of '*entertainment'* such as a film shoot/ elephant polo, etc? But then, congrats to all elephant friends. It is definitely worth rejoicing this particular ruling by the high court. Coming to the query on temperature- >> Indian elephants can survive dry periods. But in the wild they take cover of trees and water themselves frequently, spend time near mud pools dusting their bodies to regulate temperature. Most importantly they avoid running as it would further increase the body temperature and their ear fanning capacity is reduced (used to regulate body temperature). Like humans prolonged exposure to heat can dehydrate the elephants leading to losing consciousness and even death. I would give more focus on the psychological trauma that these captive elephants go through during a film shoot or a game as elephant polo. This is something people consciously pretend they dont notice. Elephant friends/ researchers claim and proclaim that elephants are so like us and then when it comes to games as elephant polo/ film shooting suddenly (some) switch sides and claim all is well with them and that they are enjoying it. The very act of taming an elephant is referred to as " breaking " the elephant - be it thai method of phajaan or the chained beating/ pit beating followed in India....referring to breaking the 'elephant' in the elephant. If separating a social animal from his/ her herd was not enough, we completely break the elephant's self esteem by dominating over an animal which literally walks fearless of any other animal in the jungle. Only extended observation of captive elephants and comparing them with elephants in the wild will give you this answer. An email would be insufficient to even put in points the various reasons why any form of captivity of elephants is not just in-elephant(ane) [not sure if the word humane has any relevance left], it is a crime you are knowingly committing. One thing I would like to mention (which I have mentioned several times in the past), the direct consequence of encouraging the use of elephants in any form of captivity is that the cycle of *demand - supply - demand* will increase and soon you will have more Sonepur melas around the country. Thanks, Pablo.
