Wednesday October 10 Got a badly-behaved labrador or beagle that rips up your backyard or chews your house? Don't despair - a company that trains dogs for border security work may take it off your hands. Sydney-based detector dog trainer Hanrob is conducting a national recruitment drive for beagles and labradors that are so destructive their families can no longer cope with their behaviour. Hanrob managing director Andrew Biggs says families with overactive, high-energy pets often end up putting them in the pound, but they could be put to work for their country instead. " We're looking for dogs between 10 months to three years old that demonstrate attributes of destructive behaviour, " he said. " So that's ripping up backyards, jumping fences and being highly food-driven. " These are the ingredients we're looking for. " Mr Biggs said the chosen dogs would undergo an intensive three month training course, learning to detect contraband through sniffing exercises backed by positive reinforcement. Five of the new recruits would head to new jobs in Hong Kong, two to Japan and the remainder would stay to work in Australia. Mr Biggs said the dogs in Japan and Hong Kong would be used to search for the illegal importation of raw meat and live animals, in a bid to prevent the spread of bird flu and rabies. " It's absolutely vital that we stop diseases such as this from entering places like Hong Kong, " he said. " If the avian influenza did manage to infiltrate this border the economic consequences would be dire.
