The Khaeej Times column describes two specific incidents. In the first, the victim did absolutely the wrong thing: > Sunil Singh, 17, was walking down his dusty lane at Najafgarh after >watching a late night show of a Hindi blockbuster. Few street dogs >howled at him. He confronted the predators only to see that the >growling pack of dogs had grown by many in numbers. He ran for his >life, but was chased by the ferocious dogs for some 100 metres till >he fell to the ground. As soon as Singh ran, the outcome was predictable. No human being can outrun a pack of dogs. On the other hand, a single dog-wise cat can send an entire pack running for their lives with their tails between their legs and whimpering, just by glaring at the lead dog and taking a menacing half staff toward him. Pro-animal organizations need to teach bite avoidance and bite response. The single tip I have found most valuable, from the late Humane Society of the U.S. representative Guy Hodge, was to push a bitten limb into the dog's mouth instead of pulling away. That forces the dog to let go, instead of producing injury from the dog's serrated teeth--and usually, when the dog lets go, the wound does not even bleed. I have been bitten countless times, both before and after getting Hodge's advice, but have not had a serious bite in nearly 20 years now, after learning the push-instead-of-pull technique. In the second case, the community itself created the conditions that caused the pack attack-- >It was even worse in 12-year-old Nain Kumar's case. His torso could >not be found. He was identified by the part of his mauled face; his >blood stained shirt and shoes were found nearby. Parts of human >skeleton, supposedly his, were scattered in one km area at Yamuna >Pushta here. > > He was supposedly attacked by the scavenging dogs of nearby basti >(slum cluster), where animal carcasses are dumped in hundreds daily. >The boy had ventured out in the evening well past sunset. Police >said it appeared that he was dragged for about 50 metres close to >the carcass-dumping ground before being eaten. There should not be a " carcass-dumping ground " in or anywhere near habitation, if indeed one exists at all. This is not how to properly dispose of animal remains. Having such a site is an open invitation to dogs and wild scavengers to congregate, & when they congregate, they will form packs to fight over the pickings. Any pack will view any intruder as a threat to their share of the food supply. -- Merritt Clifton Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE P.O.
