The 40kg carcass, worth around RM16,000, was most likely meant for the cooking pot in Thailand, to satisfy the appetites of exotic food lovers. Teams from the Kelantan Wildlife Department (Perhilitan) and the Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) cornered the car near Sungai Golok at 5.30pm. The Perhilitan team had trailed the smuggler for six hours from Gua Musang, before asking the Rantau Panjang UPP for help in nabbing the driver as he headed for an illegal jetty. UPP state commander Mazlan Che Hamid said the driver escaped by jumping into a boat and crossing the river into Thailand. " The team found the carcass with its internal organs removed and wrapped in white plastic in the boot. " Diesel oil was smeared on the package to reduce the smell. " We suspect the smuggler was planning to take the meat across the border to be sold at restaurants specialising in exotic meat. " The panther is a protected species and those caught hunting or selling it can be fined RM3,000 or jailed for three years under the Wildlife Act.
