*Invoking reptiles*: Snakes visit Durga this puja

Kishalay Bhattacharjee

Thursday, October,18 2007 (Agartala):

In *pandals* of Agartala snakes are a new addition apart from the idol and

they could be over stepping the Wildlife permit in doing so.

Durga Puja *pandal* decorations are always a variety from traditional to the

bizarre and Tripura is known for its exquisite idols and *pandals*.

But this year Shantikam Sangha Puja Committee went to the extent of

exhibiting live snakes including King Cobras in an aquarium.

They got these snakesfrom a snake charmer who caught them in Tripura itself.

Salim Miyan a snake charmer said, " In Assam and Tripura its a little

difficult, in other North Easterb states there's no problem. I travel

through Nagaland. Arunachal Mizoram playing with snakes. its a good business

there here it was difficult I could manage only 19 snakes "

The puja committee has received official sanction to display the snakes even

though such display is usually permitted only for educational and research

purposes.

The state's Chief Wildlife Warden was among the visitors to the *pandal*.

B K Bahugana Chief Wildlife Warden said, " The law and Wildlife Protection

Act permits exhibition of snakes with permission for educational and

awareness purpose. "

The organizers claim that say they are educating visitors by displaying

different snakes.

Debashish Shil Secretary Shantikami Sangha said, " We had applied to the

forest department to display snakes for awareness. They are not dangerous

and we wanted people to know that. Forest dept appreciated our idea and

permitted us against a royalty of 500/- per snake. We've displayed 30 snakes

and paid Rs 15000. "

" After the pujas we shall release them in the wild, " he said

This is cruel & against the law of the land, snakes are used as a tool for

profit & publicity not for education - what & which type of education - who

& where required ?

PFA HARYANA <www.pfaharyana.in> demands that all persons related to this

event must be booked under the violations of the W.P. ACT, 1972 & P.C.A ACT,

1960 read with other related laws/notifications/CZA instructions. The

wildlife officials related to this also be booked under IPC & strict action

must be taken against them.
