Guest guest
Dear all, The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) on a complaint from PETA- India written a strong letter to the advertising agency which developed the commercial advertisement (TVC) for State Bank of India (SBI) credit cards for violating the rules under Performing Animals (Registration) Rules, 2001 asking them for an immediate halt on the telecast of a TVC. I am posting a set of letters obtained from PETA- India in this regard which are self explanatory. There has been a substantial rise of Indian TV Commercials of late which have been sending across wrong and misleading messages in the society either by using animals or graphics (not real animals) to sell concepts and products. It is not that these agencies are not aware of the law and the rules, it is because most of such agencies after committing an offense get away easily with either a minimum penalty or scrapping of the advertisement or some minor changes such as a scroll with a statutory warning that is flashed for a second or two. Most of such scrolls can only be read by using a magnifier. Like every offender the TV Commercial agency is one step ahead of the enforcement agencies. Television commercials being a creative medium involving top notch professionals working day and night to develop something catchy, something unusual, we the animal people are definitely going to be left far far behind when it comes to keeping pace with the creative geniuses of the advertising world. Therefore whenever you come across any advertisement or TVC (India specific) that you feel could perhaps be sending out a negative signal to animal welfare/ rights then please contact the AWBI or PETA- India at the following address and register your complaint so that action is taken: Contact for more Details:- ANIMAL WELFARE BOARD OF INDIA, 13/1, Third Seaward Road, Valmiki Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, CHENNAI-600 041. Doctor Films, C/o. Jeaqulin Kennel, Selvis Rebello, 550/13, Sector-5, Bhagyalaxmi Society, Charkop, Kandivali (W), Mumbai-67. Sir, Sub: Telecast of Hindi –Ad Film- " Golden Eggs " without obtaining No Objection Certificate from AWBI under Performing Animals (Registration) Rules 2001. Reg. We draw your attention to our letter no: 8-2/402/P-2007-HE dated 8/10/2007 conveying the Boards permission under the Performing Animals (Registration) Rules 2001.M/s Doctor Films, Mumbai for using one Broiler Hen-1 in Hindi –Ad Film ? " Golden Eggs " for SBI Credit Cards. You have not submitted the CD after post shoot of the Ad. for obtaining the " No Objection Certificate " before telecasting the Ad in all T.V. channels violating the rules under Performing Animals (Registration) Rules, 2001. On viewing the Ad on TV Channels it is saw that a chicken is being made to go up an escalator railing, travel on a motorcycle, stuffed inside a letter box, being thrown on a poolside table appears as if the chicken flew on to the table and is also made to perch on high and look down on the model. The depiction and the usage of the chicken in this Ad. is very cruel. It is obvious, that the chicken would never have done any of these stunts willingly. It may be noted that the feet of the chicken were glued on the escalator railing so the chicken would not jump off the moving railing, and it is also observed that the wings may have been clipped together so the chicken would not flap them in panic whilst the film was being shot. ?.2 -2- Hence you are requested to immediately stop the telecast failing which the Board will be constrained to take immediate legal action against you. Action taken in this regard may be intimated immediately. Please treat this matter as most urgent. Yours faithfully, (R.B.CHAUDHARY) Asst. Secretary (Offg.)
