Dear Friends of the Orangutan,

Don't miss Episode 2 of Orangutan Island 8:30 tonight on Animal Planet. (If you

missed the first episode, it is repeated at 8 p.m.)

Featuring the ground-breaking work of Lone Droscher-Nielsen and the Borneo

Orangutan Survival Foundation's Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Project, this series

gives viewers an inside look at the penultimate stage of a group of orangutans'

rehabilitation. The Island is one of many managed by BOS providing a final

training ground for orphaned orangutans before they are released back to the

wild.

If you want to help these orangutans, please visit www.savetheorangutan.co.uk

ORANGUTAN ISLAND: The Intruder

*World Premiere Friday, November 9 at 8:30 PM (ET/PT)*

As the 35 orangutans continue to settle into their new home, an intruder

lurks. But is he a threat to the young community? Meanwhile, the first signs of

a fledgling society begin to emerge as Cha Cha’s new friendship with Daisy

continues to grow. We meet the mischievous “Bandit Boys,” a group of young

male orangutans whose bond began at the Center. Saturnus, one of the Bandit

Boys, concentrates his efforts on gaining Jasmine’s affections but is thwarted

by the appearance of Hamlet, an older male from a neighboring island who takes

Jasmine hostage to exert his dominance on ORANGUTAN ISLAND. Saturnus tries to

save Jasmine but is helpless until Daisy leads the Bandit Boys to launch an

attack. It’s an amazing act of solidarity that would never happen among wild

orangutans.

ANIMAL PLANET FORGES NEW GROUND TO WITNESS THE BIRTH OF A

FLEDGLING JUNGLE SOCIETY ON ORANGUTAN ISLAND

Animal Planet’s Newest Docudrama premieres Friday, November 2, at 9 PM

(ET/PT)

(Silver Spring, MD) – A desperate struggle for survival is raging in the heart

of Borneo’s forests. Illegal logging rapidly is destroying the orangutans’ last

home in the wild, leaving hundreds of orangutan babies orphaned and homeless.

The future appears bleak for the red-haired “people of the forest,” who share

97% of our DNA. But a groundbreaking project offers a ray of hope that one of

our closest relatives can be saved. Enter project pioneer and founder of the

largest primate rescue project in the world, Lone Droscher-Nielsen. Thanks to

the passion and perseverance of Lone and her team at B.O.S (Borneo Orangutan

Survival Foundation) project – the Nyaru Menteng Rescue and Rehabilitation

Center, 35 young orangutans of Forest School 103 will get the chance to live

wild on a protected, 100-acre island. Here, they will hone their survival skills

with the hope that one day they can return to their natural habitat. On November

2, at 9 PM (ET/PT), for the first time on

television, viewers can watch these normally solitary creatures battle for

power and struggle to form their own society on *ORANGUTAN ISLAND*. Beginning

November 9, the series will air regularly Fridays at 8:30 PM (ET/PT).

Follow this lively bunch as they leave school for their real world education

when Lone and her team transfer the social and loveable Cha Cha, the mischievous

“Bandit Boys,” scrappy Daisy, femme fatale Jasmine, moody Chen Chen and the rest

of their classmates to the island. Here, they must overcome their traumatized

childhoods and cope without the constant human support they’ve come to depend

on. How will they handle the transition from the center? Will they remember the

skills they were taught to survive? Just as important, will the bonds they

formed while at Nyaru Menteng endure and serve as a basis for creating a

communal society? Or will issues of dominance prove too destructive?

While testing their skills and each other’s patience, these 35 rowdy young

orangutans wreak jungle havoc. Girl-crazy Saturnus somehow scores points when he

clumsily hits Jasmine on the head with a stick. But Hamlet, an intruder from a

neighboring island, has other plans for the lovely Jasmine. Fortunately, feisty

Daisy and the “Bandit Boys” come to her rescue. It will be a waiting game to see

if the older and more experienced Hamlet assumes a dominant role and destroys

the balance of this fragile, new society or if the strong bonds within the group

will hold.

“*ORANGUTAN ISLAND* opens viewers’ eyes to these amazing creatures, their

distinct personalities, the overwhelming challenges they face and, most

importantly, what people can do to help,” says Marjorie Kaplan, president and

general manager of Animal Planet and Discovery Kids Media. “They are as

different in personality and needs as humans are, and I have no doubt that after

spending some time watching these orangutans our audience is going to fall in

love.”

“It is my hope that through this series, people will become more aware of the

plight of the orangutans and will be inspired to help these incredible animals

which are heading for extinction,” says Lone Droscher-Nielsen. “I look forward

to a day when we can release these orphans back into the wild without fear that

they will perish due to lack of habitat and the resources necessary for

survival.”

Unlike wild orangutans, who live mostly solitary lives, this group will be

confined to an island where they will need to learn to live their lives together

in a community until they can be released, an experiment they would never

experience in the wild. Each week the series follows how these innocent young

orphans of the jungle deal with the power struggles and social issues their

fledgling society must face to survive on *ORANGUTAN ISLAND*.

Viewers can see clips of the series, meet the orangutans from Forest School

103, learn about the species from an orangutan expert and hear about orangutan

conservation and much more on *animalplanet.com*. --
