AP news

1. An estimated 2.7 million people were affected and 773,000 houses were

damaged, according to the Ministry of Disaster Management. Roughly 250,000 head

of cattle and poultry perished, and crops were destroyed on nearly 77,450 acres

of land.

2. Evacuations will not be so easy with roads clogged with poor people trying

to leave with their only possessions, animals, and children. Much of the

transportation in this area is by boats and launches, which have been stopped by

the increasingly high winds and waves ahead of this cyclone.

Much of the evacuation burdens will be borne by women who must keep their

children and animals safe & fed as well as themselves in the chaos. They will

find their own mobility-safety restricted by these tasks and their own

clothing-modesty ahead of storm surges, tidal waves, and floods. Many of the

deaths in recent Bangladeshi floods and cyclones have been from women and

children who have drowned and of the survivors through disease, little or no

drinkable water, and little food or relief.

A WSPA Disaster Assessment and Response Team is assessing the impact of cyclone

Sidr on animals in Bangladesh after it hit the country on Thursday night (15

November) killing more than 400 people as it uprooted trees, destroyed homes and

forced tens of thousands to flee for their lives.

Bangladesh, a low-lying delta nation of more than 140 million people, is lashed

by cyclones and floods every year which can devastate communities and the

animals which they rely on for food and for their livelihoods.

In August 2007 WSPA delivered veterinary treatment and emergency feed to animals

affected by Bangladesh’s worst floods in living memory.

Further updates and details of any intervention by WSPA will be posted here.
