Over a week after Mumbai Mirror reported on bull fights organised at Pisavli village near Dombivli, locals at Kalyan and Dombivli held a marathon bull fight in which 30 bulls locked horns for over seven hours. The spectacle was organised at Kon village on the outskirts of Kalyan. It can be noted that after Mirror's report last Saturday on the bull fight at Dombivli, the police had booked the organisers and arrested four of them, who were later remanded to judicial custody. Anupkumar Singh, deputy commissioner of police in-charge of the area, had said he wouldn't tolerate bull fights in the area. However, barely a week later on Sunday, another mega bull fight was organised allegedly with the blessings of Pundalik Mhatre, Mayor of Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC). Huge banners with his photograph were put up all over the field near the fish market at Kon village, where the fight was held. Over 30 bulls from several villages in the area locked horns. Goat fights were also held at the ground. The event went on till 4 pm. Interestingly, police surveyed the area when the fights were going on, but just to drive away vendors standing near the ground. When contacted, Mhatre said he was at Kon village to meet his in-laws who stay there. " I had nothing to do with the event. I had gone to the village to meet my in-laws, " he said. Asked about his pictures on the banners put up by organisers, he said, " Somebody must have put my photo on the banners but I had nothing to do with it. These days, anybody can get my picture and put it on a banner. " Attempts to contact Thane police commissioner D Sivanandhan, DCP Ankush Shinde and senior officers at Shantinagar police station, in whose jurisdiction the fight took place, did not yield any results. While Sivanandhan and Shinde did not answer the phone calls and SMSes, senior inspector at the police station in the area was not on duty, Sunday being his weekly off. *TRAINED TO KILL* Bull fights are held in the Kalyan-Dombivli belt every year after Diwali. Bulls with the right pair of horns are chosen. Once chosen, a bull is given a special mixture of pulses, oil, jaggery and eggs, for about a month. They are made to swim regularly to keep fit and are treated with special massage. They are forced to abstain from sex for a month. Three days before the fight, the bulls are confined to dark rooms. This is done to make them restless and irritable. -- Nilesh Bhanage +91 9820161114 www.pawsasia.org
