World Elephant Polo championship concludes in Chitwan The 26th World Elephant Polo Association Championships 2007 concluded in Meghali, Chitwan with the prize distribution ceremony held on 24th November. http://www.nepalnews.com.np/archive/2007/nov/nov26/news17.php Chopard from Hongkong won the coveted WEPA Cup, defeating Chivas Regal (7-4). The Chopard Olympic Cup was won by Caledonian Cavaliers of Scotland who beat Airey & Wheeler in an entertaining final. The last game of the tournament was played between two local teams; National Parks and Tiger Tops that represented by their respective Mahouts (lone riders) played a thoroughly entertaining game with Tiger Tops, eventually finding the winning goal. The real thriller of the 26th WEPA 2007 Elephant Polo Championships was the 2nd WEPA Semi-final played between the National Parks team and Chivas Regal. The fast paced game at full time was a draw with 9 goals each. But during the Sudden Death play off, star player of Chivas Regal, Peter Prentice came up with an astounding goal from 25 yards out. He hit a cracker that rose up in the air and was still a good five feet up when it entered the goal. This year's tournament attracted a record number of 12 teams from around the world: Chopard, (Hongkong), Airey & Wheeler (Bahamas), Tickles & Ivory (Singapore), British Gurkhas Ele Polo Team, Indian Tigers, Australian Elephant Polo Team, Chivas Regal (Scotland), Caledonian Cavaliers (Scotland), Tiger Tops Tuskers (Iceland-USA), National Parks Nepal, Andrew Martin Ele Polo Team (UK) and Capitol Pachyderms (USA). Ambassadors of the United Kingdom and Denmark also attended the concluding ceremony. The event was organised by Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge on the edge of Chitwan National Park. The World Elephant Polo Championships raises money each year for the local region and has supported schools and orphanages in the area. nepalnews.com Nov 26
