Guest guest
Friday, December 07, 2007 Guwahati: Officials of the wildlife department headed by the Divisional Forest Officer of the Assam State Zoo, Mr. Narayan Mahanta successfully tranquilize and rescue a 5 year old female leopard cat from New Guwahati railway colony locality. The cat which strayed out from the nearby forest patch in search of prey was trapped by the local residents after which the Zoo was informed. It may be noted that the city`s urban wildlife is under tremendous pressure from the existing encroachment, loss of prey animals and rampant fresh encroachment in the surrounding hills and forest patches within Guwahati city and its suburbs. On Dec 3rd this year a full grown leopard was rescued from the most busy commercial hub of Guwahati, Fancy Bazaar. The leopard was believed to have come down in search of food and was reportedly sighted for three days after which it was finally rescued. Yesterday a leopard cub carcass was recovered from the santipur locality of Guwahati city. It is believed to have fallen victim to human- animal conflict.
