*Tuskers creating havoc in Baksa villages

* From Our Correspondent

GORESWAR, Dec 17 – Villagers under Tamulpur sub-divison in Baksa district

are passing their days in anxiety owing to terror created by herds of wild

elephants for the last several months.

Recently, a herd of 70-90 wild elephants went on the rampage near the

Puthimari river bank. Villages such as sonmohari, Maregaon, Harijora,

Halongbari, Balabari, Dhekipota, Kachubari, Jhargaon, Betagaon, Kalchini and

Bagaribari located on the south of the Barnadi Wildlife Sanctuary were

affected by the pachyderms.

In a similar incident, three persons were killed by a herd of wild elephants

at Dhekipota village which also saw the destruction of several houses in the

area.

Recently a herd of wild elephants entered Harijora village under Goreswar

revenue circle in Baksa district and destroyed houses and crops of several

villages.

In spite of such recurring pachyderm attacks on agriculture produce and

human habitation, the administration seems to be in deep slumber. No steps

have been taken to control wild elephants nor any measure inetiated for the

safe return of the wild beasts to the Barnadi Wildlife Sanctuary is in the

offing.

Meanwhile, Maheswar Basumatary, EM, BTC visited the affected areas

accompanied by Ramakanta Basumatary. Anjima Narzary, President and general

secretary, Goreswar Block BPPE, Arabinda Boro, chairman, Gopchar VCDC and

Swagwamsar Basumatary, Balahati VCDC offered kerosene and crackers to the

villagers as an immediate and elementary measure.

Affected villagers urged the administration to protect them from the

frequent attacks of wild elephants.
