*Circus elephant goes berserk, wildlife dept. officials called in *

Staff Reporter

Kolkata: There was temporary panic within the premises of a private circus

company here on Wednesday when one of its elephants went berserk, damaging

circus property.

Attempts by the circus employees to rein in the elephant, a fully-grown

adult male called Bhola, having failed, Wildlife department officials were

called in.

They used tranquilizer darts, shot from a distance of about 10 feet, to

control the animal.

Tension prevailed in the rather densely populated Tala Park area where the

circus was stationed and a huge crowd gathered to witness the antics of the

elephant.

Trouble started in the morning when one of the two pairs of shackles was

opened to enable the elephant to drink water.

Tent attacked

The mahout (trainer) failed to control it when the elephant offered

resistance and it started attacking the circus tent, shaking the gate and

the ticket counter close to it. The elephant, however, did not break free

from the premises.

" The elephant is in heat, " said Rathin Banerjee, Divisional Forest Officer

(Wildlife), explaining the reasons behind such unnatural behaviour.

The circus authorities have decided to suspend the show involving Bhola for

the next seven days to provide him rest.

I could not let this go without comment, as there are two reports posted

today where the REPORTERS themselves use language that insults all

intelligent beings, including elephants: " Circus elephant goes berserk " " A

herd of elephants sneaking from Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve " " Tent

attacked " " Elephants spread terror for six hours "

Maybe its something " lost in translation " but why do reporters make it sound

like wild animals trying to live their god-intended lives are " berserk "

" mad " or " spreading terror. " Perhaps as activists we should start calling on

the press to stop this propaganda against animals. Here is what I suggest:

whenever your local paper reports that a wild animal is behaving

" unnaturally " when it is just doing what any being would do when subjected

to torture and forced captivity, that we call the reporting agency to task

for such deception by writing letters to the editor, and urging others to do

the same. Just as the media plays a role in human repression, they also play

the same role as animal repressors and propagandists for all those who

benefit from such repression. Perhaps a " Media Watch " website would also be

in order exposing sloppy reporting and slanted language against wild beings.

Just a thought...

Dear Azam

Can u Please tell the name of Circus.Has the circus having recognition as

Captive animal Facility from CZA.The companies having elephants or other wild

animals must have recognition under sec 38H of Wildlife protection Act.One of

the condition for recognition is that they should have tranquillsing Gun with

them.Elephants must be microchipped and there are certain other conditions too.

the second thing is registration under Performing Animals Rules 2001 under PCA

1960 from Animal Welfare Board of India.

please do the needful.
