It is an ill fated week for leopards of Rajasthan. On 17th Dec a young male

leopard was found dead on railway tracks near Jawaai Bridge (Pali district) of

Rajasthan. The deadbody had some injuries on the head, it was allegedly killed

by a speeding train. Evidently the placement of the wound did not suggest any

such thing. But, forest officials have declared that it died because it was hit

by a train. Benefit of doubt may be given to this incident but two shocking

incidents show proof of barbarism towards these wild cats.

On Thursday 20th of Dec two leopards were killed by rustics in Rajasthan. A four

year old male was shot to death in Amber (Jaipur) by the farmers. Postmortem of

the deadbody revealed a pellet in the forehead of the creature. After killing it

the farmers informed the nearest Police station but no one came to the scene

till evening. In the end it was taken away by Police and submitted to forest

officials who confirmed that its death was caused by the gunshot.

On the very same day one more female leopard was mercilessly beaten up to death

by farmers in SawaaiManSingh Wildlife Sanchuary. As if the beating was not

enough the farmers hanged the leopard's deadbody on a tree. According to them

this female was attacking their livestock from past one month. No official

statement has come so far from the Forest department or Government regarding the

killing of these two leopards.

These are not the only incidences, a lot of wild animals are killed or poached

everyday in our state as well in other states of India. Villagers who stay in

protected forests, national parks, Sanchuaries should be evaccuated from there.

As it is there are very few forest areas left and the wild animals should not be

blamed for roaming and hunting in their own shrinking kingdoms. It is we humans

who are intruding in their natural life cycle by using every single piece of

land for cultivation, business, housing etc. They are not intruders in our

territory but we humans are intruders in their personal space. Man and animal

conflict is taking a toll on the latter and at this rate the day is not far when

we would see these magnificent creatures only in pictures and videos.
