Regards, Prakshal Mehta (M) 9898899508 ************************************************ Synopsis Prakshal Mehta Roll No. 11 MDC-II Introduction: Once Mahatma Gandhi had said, “the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” In many countries tourism plays a major role in the establishment of protected areas and an area's tourism potential is an important factor in the selection process. No matter what sort of protection an area enjoys, the danger that tourism will harm the natural and aesthetic value of the area is always present. (UNEP, Protected area management) Tourism activity in a national park or any other protected area can serve as a self-financing mechanism and therefore as a tool of conservation. This will, however, only be possible if the level, type and management of tourism are appropriate and, in particular, the " carrying capacity " of the area is respected. (UNEP, Protected area management) Thus this study is being undertaken to understand how and in what way tourism has an impact on Gir. Title: Impact of tourism on Gir (as a protected area) Hypothesis: Tourism is helping towards conservation in Gir. Background: Out of various threats that Gir is facing today like poaching, cattle grazing, removal of forest produce, national highways and railway routes; tourism has also become critical. From around 30,000 visitors in 1985-86, the tourists had increased to over 1 lakh in 1995-96. While a genuine tourist is beneficial to the park, there are many who come to the nearby Somnath temple on a pilgrimage. Increased in tourist traffic has led to the unplanned and uncontrolled growth of the industry which has the potential to cause long term damage to the park, and gives a typical commercial look to the park’s pristine surrounding. (Gir National Park- A handbook, TCGL) Kankai, Banej and Tulsishyam are temples situated within the park and attract over two lakh pilgrims annually. Pilgrims, who come from distant places, want an overnight accommodation, and the temple management keeps making plans which conflict with needs of conservation ethics of the park. (Gir National Park- A handbook, TCGL) Objectives: 1) To find whether the religion tourism is helping or harming conservation in protected area of Gir, 2) To find whether the normal tourism is helping or harming conservation in protected area of Gir, 3) To compare the impact of both the forms of tourism on the protected area of Gir. Operational definition: 1 Gir : Protected areas of Gir national Park and Gir Wildlife Sanctuary 2 Impact: Impact here means in what ways the conservation of the Protected Area of Gir is being affected. 3 Tourism: Any activity carried out by the tourists/pilgrims during their visit to the park (like traveling to the park, staying, etc). Also it includes the activities carried out by the park/temple management for the tourists/pilgrims (like traveling, accommodation and other facilities) Tourism here includes two types of tourism. a.
