Guest guest
*PETA ASKS BANGALORIANS, 'IMAGINE GETTING KILLED FOR YOUR SKIN'* *'Dead' and 'Bloodied' Bodies Graphically Portray What Happens to Calves Who Are Slaughtered for Leather* Bangalore – Lying motionless and covered in " blood " next to a skinned " calf " and underneath a banner that reads, " Imagine Getting Killed for Your Skin " , members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India (PETA) protestested against the cruel leather industry on Tuesday in Bangalore. PETA aims to show that dead skin is never fashionable and to raise awareness about how animals are treated before they are turned into leather shoes, bags and other products. PETA encourages shoppers to choose synthetic and natural-fibre materials instead of animal skins: * Tuesday, 18 December* *Time: 12 noon* *Place:* *Opposite the Mahatma Gandhi statue, MG Road, Bangalore* Buying leather contributes directly to the misery at slaughterhouses. The vast majority of animals used for their skin suffer horrors such as painful mutilations, deprivation of all that is natural and important to them, physical abuse and cruel treatment during transport and slaughter. Animals killed for their flesh and skin are often dismembered and skinned while they are still conscious. In India, even the most basic animal protection laws are ignored in the leather industry. Leather tanneries also wreak havoc on the environment, and their pollution has been linked to cancer, respiratory infections and other illnesses in humans. " Bags, belts and shoes made of dead skin should be shunned by the living. We ask everyone to think before they buy and to make compassionate choices. Since wearing leather supports unimaginable cruelty to animals, many people will not be caught dead wearing animal skins " , says PETA's Natasha Paul. " It is easy to choose products made of natural fibres like cotton, jute, satin and synthetics – all of which are humane options that do not contribute to cruelty to animals. " Synthetic leather and other animal-friendly options are available at just about any major shoe or clothing shop.
