About half of the *ghariyal* population in National Chambal Sanctuary has died in a month's time creating a threat of the animal going extinct from its oldest habitat. Though the official estimate of death is 64 juvenile *ghariyals*, the Bombay Natural History Society has put the figure close to 100. There are about 182 *ghariyals* in the 35 kilometre stretch of river Chambal, where the deaths have taken place. The cause of death of the critically endangered animal is still not known, though presence of lead has been found in the liver of the dead animals. The meeting aims to look at the reasons for the sudden deaths and suggest necessary steps to ensure their safety. -- United against elephant polo http://www.freewebs.com/elephantpolo
