Guest guest
Dear colleagues, After receiving an email from a source claiming to be Pradeep Nath from VSPCA asking for monetary help, I have received another similar email from an individual claiming to be a vet in Assam. I wanted to ask if any of you have been receiving such mails since it seems that these accounts have been hacked into judging by what the senders claim. If it really is so, all Gmail users need to be cautious since Gmail is widely used. I would be grateful if anyone could share some information on what appears to be systematic infiltration. Best wishes and kind regards,
Guest guest
Hello All, Have compiled this mail on suggestions by experts, hope this serves the purpose of and all of us who at some point of time may fall victims, internet is getting more and more infections every passing day. But with little effort we can hope to safeguard ourselves to a great extent. The storm worm has created a huge network of infected computers- an estimated 2 million computers have been affected. Before the Storm worm began its attack, an average day sees about 1 million virus- laden emails crossing the internet. On July 19, 2007 Postini recorder 48.6 million and on July 24, 2007 researchers tracked 46.2 million malicious messages -- more than 99% of them are from Storm worm. Experts say, " Storm relies on social engineering and its best ally so it is realy important that computer users keep their guard and be suspicious of any unsolicited email containing an attachment or a link. Even if it mentions something you are familiar with or promises some sort of critical data, always check with the sender to see what it is and why they sent it. " It is also warned by IT experts that users and IT managers can protect their systems by blocking peer-to-peer networking. When the malware runs, it tries to link up with other infected hosts via P2P networks. An expert called Stewart noted that if that function is blocked, then the users`s computer cannot be a part of the botnet. *Please do not open any ttachments in your mails that you were not expecting or s in your mail - at home or work.* ** *Avoid messengers- MSN Messengers, , Google Talk or any providers.* ** *Avoid using P2P networks- typically all the file sharing platforms. If you have these at home, uninstall them.* ** *Run an anti- spyware software on your office or home computer. delete anything that the software suspects to be malware.* *To All Gmail users:* ** Download Google Pack from http://pack.google.com/intl/en-gb/pack_installer_new.html?hl=en-gb & gl=in & utm_sou\ rce=en_gb_IN-et-more & utm_medium=et & utm_campaign=en_gb_IN & ciNum=11 This, now, come with Sun's StarOffice suite which was the commercial version of OpenOffice. Google has entered into a deal with Sun where Google distributes this to visitors of its websites for free. And it has Norton Security Suite, and has a basic anti-spyware software. Please note that this is only for your home PCs. No software from the Google pack should be installed on official computers. And, it is a whopping 150MB download - please download at home. Now MP3s are being used as spam. In the past 18 hours, 8-10% of all spam on the Internet spreading via e-mails is a small MP3 file of about 85 Kbytes that promotes the stock of a company called " Exit Only " . Do not open any such mail - in your group mail account or personal accounts. While many corporate houses have installed anti-spam devices into their mailboxes, please, be vigilant with other free email internet accounts. Regards, Azam P.S: The above mail has been written with the help of information received on virus alerts from various IT sources.
