The bull fights which can be compared to the Spanish traditions of bull fights is on the verge of extinction and now confined only to Ahatguri in Nagaon district. To bring back the glory days of this ancient tradition , a herd of bulls made their appearance on a paddy field at Puria on National Highway 52. But instead of the traditional fight taking place, the bulls were seen resting in the paddy field throughout the day. It may be mentioned here that the Supreme Court has recently passed an order banning bull fights in the country. This sport which is very popular in certain villages of Tamil Nadu, is being missed by the locals there and people have threatened to start in agitation demanding the removal of the ban. On receiving information about the bulls, the Deputy Commissioner of Darrang deputed ND Patwari, executive magistrate to monitor the situation. A team of the Forest Department from the Orang National Park led by a range officer has also been deputed to ensure the safety and security of not only the crowd gathered at the field but also to see that the bulls are not hurt in any way. According to the Forest Department team, the bulls are not dangerous but said that these animals are highly erratic in their behaviour and can turn violent especially when surrounded by people. Forest officials believe that the bulls have come from the Orang or Pabitora. -- United against elephant polo http://www.stopelephantpolo.com
