The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted conditional permission to Tamil Nadu for holding the traditional *Jallikattu*, which involves bull fighting during the festival of Pongal. A Bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan said the District authority should ensure the animals are not subjected to cruelty. It said the event will have to be recorded on video. Registration of all races is compulsory in 12 districts of Tamil Nadu and about 400 races will be held. Further, the bench said the district authorities would take all precautions to prevent any injury either to the spectators or animals and therefore, proper barricading of the race site will be done so as to separate the spectators and participants. Any organisation or club with intent to hold *Jallikattu* will have to inform the concerned District Collector three days prior to the event. The officials of the Animal Welfare Board will have to witness the event. The court said that after the event, the Collector will have to give a report within two weeks. The court passed its order on an application moved by Tamil Nadu Government seeking modification of January 11 interim order refusing to vacate the stay on holding *Jallikattu*.(With PTI inputs) -- United against elephant polo http://www.stopelephantpolo.com
