I expect many AAPN participants will remember that on

November 2, 1998, Singapore Primary Production Department assistant

dog shooter Heng Bak Tong, 56, working with animal control officer

Loh Kar Seng, 43, shotgunned & killed Lim Cheng Choon, 59, as the

latter was feeding several street dogs.

Contractor shot in attempt to get strays

By RASLAN BAHAROM

TAIPING: An attempt by the Taiping Municipal Council to get

rid of stray dogs went awry when a passing motorcyclist was shot in

the leg Wednesday.

The victim, electrical wiring contractor Wan Ah Chye, 60,

with his wife riding pillion, was on the way to town to do some

shopping when the mishap occurred at about 8.30am.

" Shortly before that, I saw a dog running in front of my

motorcycle. Then I felt a sharp pain and realised that I had been

shot, " said the father of two when interviewed at Taiping Hospital on

Wednesday.

Wan said he stopped and showed his bleeding right leg to the shooters

who were nearby and one of them immediately called for the ambulance.

" They later decided to take me and my wife in their jeep to

the hospital as I was bleeding profusely, " he added.

Wan said he was told by a doctor that there were two bullet

holes in his leg.

Council secretary Shahrom Datuk Abd Malek said since the

stray dog unit was formed 15 years ago, this was the first time a

mishap had occurred. He described it as an isolated case.

He said three council staff members, including two shooters

using Ruger .22 rifles, were involved in the operation and they had

taken all the necessary safety measures.

Taiping OCPD Asst Comm Raja Musa Raja Razak said to prevent a

recurrence of such incidents, shooters should make sure there are no

passers-by near the stray dogs.

" They must also make sure that such a location is a safe

distance away from public and housing areas, " said ACP Raja Musa who

also suggested that the council make public announcements over such

an operation so that the public could take the necessary precautions.
