* From Our Correspondent

JAMUGURIHAT, Jan 19 – Dambar Kumari Devi (37) of Niz Gorpal village under

Sootea police station was trampled to death by a wild elephant on the night

of January 10.

It is learnt that three wild elephants had entered the village at about 9 pm

and as the people tried to drive them away with fire and by beating drums,

one of the elephants caught hold of Dambar Kumari and trampled her to death.

The irate villagers manhandled the forest officials Debangq Bhusan Das and

Dulal Bora, who were present there.

The villagers took the woman's body to Sootea police station in a procession

next day and blocked the National Highway No 52 for more than an hour

demanding safety of the villagers.
