Guest guest
Dear Friends, *Incredible news this !* *Forbes Traveler* has officially announced this ( please see the slide show using the link ): * " World's Scariest Sports " *Link: http://www.forbestraveler.com/adventure/worlds-scariest-sports-slide-1.html?this\ Speed=20000 The slide begins with *Running of the Bulls *in the* *Festival of San Fermin (in Navarre, Spain) which is the *No: 01 'World`s scariest sport'.* The second slide is *Elephant Polo *and thus it becomes the* No: 02 'World`s scariest sport'. *Well the good news is that 'elephant polo' is now being finally accepted as one of the scariest sport in the World. This at a time when many critics within the animal people still stand firm on their beliefs of the sport being a SAFE one for the animal as well as the man sitting on top. The sad thing is that skepticism may still not die and we may have another unnecessary debate coming up. For now *CHEERS* to all who have stood *'UNITED AGAINST ELEPHANT POLO',* and are still fighting for the eradication of this cruel and stupid sport. This announcement is also a morale boaster for our friends who are spearheading the abolition of 'Jallikattu', Buffalo fights and other forms of animals in sports/ entertainment. Guest guest
>The slide begins with *Running of the Bulls *in the* *Festival of >San Fermin (in Navarre, Spain) which is the *No: 01 'World`s >scariest sport'.* About 18,000 people per year run with the bulls in San Fermin, including 4,000 in each of the two weekend runs, and 2,000 in each of five others. There have been 14 fatalities since 1924, an average of about one every six years. That works out to one fatality per 108,000 runnings of 825 yards, amounting to about half a kilometer. In other words, one fatality per 54,000 kilometers traveled. Truth is, running with the bulls at San Fermin is substantially safer than jaywalking at rush hour in most big cities -- & nobody kills the taxi drivers. They can come back again & again. >The second slide is *Elephant Polo *and thus it becomes the* No: 02 >'World`s scariest sport'. I'm aware of only one serious injury to a human participant or spectator in the past 25 years of elephant polo. " Forbes " is a word that means " beans. " Forbes is a magazine for bean-counters, who think they might really like to become lion tamers, & many of them already have the hat. -- Merritt Clifton Editor, ANIMAL PEOPLE P.O. Guest guest
It is good if the negative aspect of the game is publicised widely in international magazines. Guest guest
I had initially drafted an email to my friend Meritt which Dr. John felt needed to get a lil mellowed down in its approach. So I am rephrasing what I had told him for everybody s info. People like Dr. Chinny Krishnan have been fighting hard against their own traditions to ban Jallikattu....not because there are lesser people dying in road crashes at Chennai, but because he like most of us understand that " sports " such as jallikattu is not only dangerous to humans but IS SUCH A HORRID " SPORT " AS FAR AS THE ANIMALS INVOLVED IN IT ARE CONCERNED. If we did not publicize stats such as the one in Forbes and rather went around discussing the ratio as against the number of deaths in road accidents, we could as well decide to shut down every single AWO or Animal NGOs on planet earth including Animal papers on which many survive. Let me give you one as per your logic - around 20 odd rhinos were shot dead last year in India alone. Considering the world population of around 6.6billion you would say the occurance is 3. *011e-9*. So it is after all not a big occurance. So people need to decide if these are the stats they want to look at or sit up and note 21 rhinos were killed in a single year (and many more as we talk), rather than how many people died of rabies because they bruised their leg against an iron rod whcih was dropped into their garden by a crow who had picked it up from the remains of a snake which had consumed a rat which had rabies and had licked that rod!!! Made sense? I guess definitly not. So lets not discuss on stats such as these.
