The five-month-old puppies lived w ithin the compound of SwastikResidency at Ghodbunder Road, and were being looked after by Prajakta Dudhmande, Darshana Sontara and Arifa Shiekh after their mother died. However, some members of the residents' committee felt the puppies were a nuisance and decided to do away with them. So on January 20, the members allegedly asked the sweeper to put all the puppies into a gunny bag. Then one of them d rove to Chena Creek near Bhayanda r and threw the bag into the marshes. Sontara, a student, and Shiekh, a home-maker, tried to stop the committee members, but failed. Dudhmande was out of town when the incident happened and when she returned the next day, she decided to look for the pups. " We threatened the sweepe r that we would turn him over to the police if he did not take us to the spot whe re the puppies wer e abandoned, " says Dudhmande, also a home-maker, " I drove to Chena bridge with Darshana, but could not find them. " They combed the nearby jungles for over six hours and finally found eight of the pups. Five of them had died during the course of the night. They rushed the survivors to a vet and filed a complaint with Kasarwadavli police station. They also informed the SPCA (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and PAWS (Plants and Animal Welfare Society). Both the animal welfare groups have sent notices to the housing society members, asking them to explain their actions. Shakuntala Majumdar, head of Thane SPCA says, " The society members put the lives of the puppies in danger. If they had issues with the puppies, they should have simply asked the municipality to take them away. " However, S N Pradhan, chairman of the housing society, denies the incident took place. But sub-inspector Kishor Sawant says, " We have recorded the statements of two eye-witnesses and the five accused. A criminal case will be filed against the society members under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1959 of 60 and Indian Penal Code. Both these sections are punishable with a fine and imprisonment. " The society members were to meet on Wednesday evening to discuss the issue. Meanwhile, the surviving puppies are safe in Dudhmande's home. Nilesh Bhanage +91 9820161114 www.pawsasia.org
