Compassionate widow's pet passion wins few fans

China Daily

2007-12-27

Huang Yujie, a 62-year-old widow, is so committed to looking after stray dogs

that she has lost several apartments and is estranged from her son, who does not

understand her passion for animals.

Huang, a resident of Benxi, Liaoning Province, has adopted 155 stray dogs in the

past decade. She has had to move six times because neighbors find her canine

family to be a nuisance.

The story started 10 years ago, when a puppy happened to follow Huang as she

walked down the street. It was love at first sight. Since then Huang has

developed what some might call an addiction to adopting pets. Few stray dogs

have crossed her path without being adopted.

So strong is her love that she has purchased dogs from restaurant owners

preparing to slaughter the unfortunate creatures for canine-hungry customers.

Huang's life is Spartan. She survives by salvaging leftover food from the

garbage, which she uses to feed both herself and her brood of dogs. Huang

currently resides with her 155 pets in two warehouses in Xihu District. " Huang

cannot stand seeing others in trouble and will give a helping hand whenever

possible, " her neighbor, surnamed Zhang, said.

Two years ago, Huang had to sell a two-room apartment because she could no

longer accommodate her 155 dogs. This so irritated her son that he broke all

contact with her.

Many neighbors have wondered what might drive Huang to pursue her love of dogs

to the point where it would damage her relationship with her family. Some

neighbors, disturbed by the barking, have beat on the windows and even tried

poisoning her pets. When the situation reaches this point, Huang knows it is

time to move house.

" I am mentally-twisted? " Huang said. " What's wrong with adopting homeless pets? "

When asked if her son offered her any kind of support, Huang turns bitter,

saying her son is handsome and that she is ashamed that she is able to spend so

little time with him.

" I miss him so much, " Huang said, with tears in her eyes. " He is a grown-up who

is able to support himself. But I worry what will happen to these pets if I

abandon them. "

Fu Bo, the head of Fushun Academy of Social Sciences in Liaoning Province, said

Huang is kindhearted, but she might have gone too far in caring for so many

strays.

He said no pet is worth sacrificing one's children.

He also urged pet-owners not to abandon their animals in public.

Man calls on public to call him about strays

2007-12-05

Liang Jun is appealing to residents of Hohhot, in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous

Region, to adopt more than 100 stray dogs and cats he has picked up in the city

since May.

He said he has spent more than 10,000 yuan ($1,350) taking care of the animals

and paying for veterinary treatment, with the help of his family and friends.

He said he was unable to afford the continued cost of care, however, and called

on others to help out.

Anyone wanting to adopt a stray dog or cat should contact Liang on his mobile

phone.

Monk turns temple into home for forlorn pooches

2007-12-17

A 71-year-old Buddhist monk named Miao Xing has spent more than 30,000 yuan

($4,076) building a home for 32 stray dogs in his temple in Xinxiang county,

Henan Province.

Miao Xing began taking in dogs dumped by local residents at the beginning of the

year.

Miao also feeds the dogs - 24 females and eight males - cakes and milk every

day.

The monk said he took the dogs in because their lives also mattered, and he

couldn't accept them dying from cold and hunger.
