Guest guest
Link: http://www.assamtribune.com/scripts/details.asp?id=feb0908\ne8 ** *'Buy one chicken get one free' * SILIGURI, Feb 8 – Chicken prices have reached an all time low with an official ban on the sale of chicken and poultry products in the wake of bird flu in West Bengal. Flouting the official order, in some places chicken was being sold with the offer of buy one get one free on the outskirts of this commercial hub in North Bengal, poultry sources said. Faced with ban on sales, poultry owners were selling off the birds at throw away price for clearance of their stock and a section of people were taking full advantage of the offer, the sources said. A buyer at Khaprael More, Bidhu Roy who purchased a chicken at Rs 25 and got one free, said that a person came on a bicycle with around 50 birds which were sold off within half an hour. Roy said that he and his neighbours in his village were consuming chicken quite regularly for the last two weeks as it was cheaper than vegetables and no case of bird flu had been reported from here. Prospects were equally grim for poultry traders who used to transact business of Rs one crore daily. The spokesman of Siliguri Poultry Businessmen's Association, Sujit Kumar Ghose, who submitted their demands to the sub-divisional officer here yesterday, urged the government to take measures for the survival of traders who were burdened with bank loans. Meanwhile, SDO, Siliguri said that the district administration and police would now strictly enforce the ban on sale of poultry products as traders did not take the order seriously. –PTI -- United against elephant polo http://www.stopelephantpolo.com
