Jorhat Gymkhana Club, organiser of the Jorhat Races, is planning to set up an equestrian school on the club premises and throw it open for all. The other equestrian schools in the state — the ones at Numaligarh Refinery, NCC in Guwahati and Assam Valley School in Tezpur — are private and choose to restrict their student list to a select few (read elite). The one at Jorhat Gymkhana Club, however, will be more open while accepting members. " The equestrian school will greatly benefit the trainees of the region, " said the president of the Jorhat Races organising committee, Prabhat Bezbaruah. Good breeds of horses, a permanent stable and trainers will be the major draws at the school. Bezbaruah said the committee has already taken up the initiative to procure good horses from Pune. The decision came as a bonus with the Jorhat Races which is being organised at the Gymkhana ground after a gap of 30 years. The 125-year-old derby is the only of its kind in the region, where ponies belonging to the Mising tribe also participate. As for the school, the Gymkhana Club will try to buy the best breeds. " The Gymkhana Club has the necessary infrastructure for the school. All they need are some good horses and trainers, " said the secretary general of the Equestrian Federation of Assam, Manoj Jalan. -- United against elephant polo http://www.stopelephantpolo.com
