Wassana Thongsuk, owner of the Maetaeng Elephant Camp, bought insurance coverage from the Thai Life Insurance for his camp's 48 elephants. Thai Life Insurance is the first insurance company in Thailand which offers coverage for pachyderms. If elephants sicken, or die from an accident or during a performance, the unusual premium package covers the cost of medical treatment, and all for a cost of just 3,000 baht for each elephant per year. Thai Insurance also plans to pander to pandas, proposing a policy for the couple pandas at Chiang Mai Zoo at no cost as a gift for them. Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui are unofficially considered as 'relationship ambassadors' between China and Thailand. They arrived at the zoo in 2003 on a 10-year loan from China amid a flurry of great expectations: both countries are waiting for the possible news of baby pandas in the pipeline.
