Guest guest
Nowhere to run ! While the Prime Minister`s office is still pondering on how to save the Tiger, the survival of yet another species in India has been neglected to such an extent that aping South Africa`s culling is certainly not far from becoming a reality here. Can we have some posts on the above subject please. It is time we took this matter up for discussion. The situation in the Northeast India is alarming and I am sure it must be pretty much the same elsewhere in the country. Cement factories, stone quarries are being allowed permission to come up right on the elephant corridors in Assam. Fresh encroachment of elephant corridors/ reserve forests and the fringe areas of National Parks and other protected areas is taking place on a war footing with the following mafias on the prowl: (a) Land Mafia, (b) Timber Mafia & © Wildlife Mafia. There is no effort undertaken to correct human interference plus whenever there is a conflict situation it is the 'elephants' or the wildlife that always suffers. Recently there was a news report that a local Assam politician along with a gang of motorists chased a herd of elephants in a conflict situating brandishing guns and fired several shots in the air. The politician was quoted in the newspaper as saying that some of the stray bullets may have also hit the elephants and injured them. Look at the audacity of thus guy, here he is announcing on a public platform that he has been shooting at elephants and no action is taken against him. There is no check on the Militant camps and their activities by the Governments to restrain them from damaging the wildlife. The Government allows several militant organisations under ceasefire to have camps inside the jungles where the cadres can stay along with their arms and ammunition. An aerial trip over Assam state, one can only see green patches with no connectivity. So where does the elephant go?? That is a glimpse of Assam and Northeast India. Now it would be interesting to have some info on the other elephant populated areas of India. We can certainly hope to not allow India go the South Africa way if only we rise up with the same fire and passion as we did for the 'Tiger'. In case we think that we should be focusing on one species at a time, we would end up definitely pushing the Indian elephants towards nothing but 'Culling' Azam -- United against elephant polo http://www.stopelephantpolo.com
