How Nani became 'lucky'

Animal lovers rescue a kitten from a 30-ft deep well 16 days after it

fell into it; to keep her alive, people from the locality used to

soak bread in milk, put it in a bucket and lower the bucket into the

well.

Nani, a three-month-old kitten, was rescued by fire brigade officials and

animal lovers in Kalyan, 16 days after it fell and got trapped inside a

30-feet deep dry well.

The residents ensured that the kitten survived and then looked for help from

professional animal rescuers.

Nani had been living with the family of Suryakant Mistry, a resident of

Kalyan's Agra Road since her birth. On February 18 Nani did not return home

after her evening stroll. Mistry said, " She is familiar with the area and

there was no chance that she could go missing. While we were looking for

her, a mewing sound attracted us to a well nearby. We saw she had slipped

inside. "

On February 19, fire brigade officers were called. Though they entered the

well, they could not rescue Nani. Pramod Waghchaware, a fireman said, " The

kitten got scared and hid inside another hole down there. She even attacked me

when I tried to reach for her. "

For the next few days, the residents kept looking for professional help.

Meanwhile, Shilpa Harkare, a resident of the same building, ensured that the

kitten survived. " I used to soak bread in milk, put it in a bucket and lower

it into the well. Then we found the contact number of Plants and Animal

Welfare Society (PAWS), who came to our rescue. "

On Tuesday, Nilesh Bhanage, head of PAWS, decided to go down the well with a

grasper. " It is an imported tool that can easily grasp even pythons. I went

down alone with some food and tried to grasp her. Initially she resisted and

slipped inside a hole, but finally I managed to catch her, " said Bhanage.

Firemen Babloo Vyapari, Anil Thakur and Vasant Mudaliar supported Bhanage

during the rescue mission.

Mistry said, " We cannot express our joy in words. We will now rename Nani as

Lucky. She is the luckiest animal surviving. "
