Photo-trapping nets tigers at Nameri

The sighting of four tigers at Nameri tiger reserve through camera trapping

has brought cheer to conservationists.

Aaranyak, an NGO, in collaboration with state forest department, initiated

camera tapping at Nameri. Photographs of four tigers were recently taken.

" Tigers are a globally endangered species and every photograph of this

majestic animal has brought hope and joy to conservationists worldwide, "

Partha Das of Aaranyak said.

According to the National Tiger Conservation Authority, there are at least

70 tigers in the reserves of Assam. The fishing cat (*Felis viverrina*) and

the large Indian civet (*Viverra zibetha*) have been photo-detected at

Nameri. These are listed as Schedule I and Schedule II species under the

Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

The Nameri reserve is situated at the foothills of the Arunachal Himalayas

on the northern part of Sonitpur district. " The reserve forests in the

buffer zones of the Nameri reserve present some of the most degraded

landscapes that used to be rich in primary forest even a decade ago.

Largescale deforestation and wanton encroachment of reserve forests have

posed a grave threat to the survival of the remaining tiger population, " Das

added.
