Aaranyak, an NGO, in collaboration with state forest department, initiated camera tapping at Nameri. Photographs of four tigers were recently taken. " Tigers are a globally endangered species and every photograph of this majestic animal has brought hope and joy to conservationists worldwide, " Partha Das of Aaranyak said. According to the National Tiger Conservation Authority, there are at least 70 tigers in the reserves of Assam. The fishing cat (*Felis viverrina*) and the large Indian civet (*Viverra zibetha*) have been photo-detected at Nameri. These are listed as Schedule I and Schedule II species under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The Nameri reserve is situated at the foothills of the Arunachal Himalayas on the northern part of Sonitpur district. " The reserve forests in the buffer zones of the Nameri reserve present some of the most degraded landscapes that used to be rich in primary forest even a decade ago. Largescale deforestation and wanton encroachment of reserve forests have posed a grave threat to the survival of the remaining tiger population, " Das added. -- United against elephant polo http://www.stopelephantpolo.com
