Henan - A female reporter from Kaifeng Television was beaten up by 20 men in

front of police while she was investigating an illegal traditional Chinese

medicine clinic last week, Xinhaunet reports. Zhang Jing visited the clinic

with a Health Ministry official and was attacked for " several minutes in

front of the police " .

*Dear John,*

* I am appalled by this, as a journalist and as an

individual. If there is a way to protest officially, please do advise.

Muzzling the press is often the first step towards self destruction. China's

media record is not something to be proud of.

Regards,*

Be aware that this was first reported by Chinese government

news media. I don't think they liked it much either, & since the

Beijing government is perfectly capable of suppressing anything

before it ever gets distributed by Xinhuanet, with their own

in-house censors, it is a reasonable bet that the cops who stood by

with their thumbs up it are in bigtime trouble.
