Guest guest
South China Morning Post CITY By May Chan 2008-03-18 Estate's cat lovers raise reward to catch and prosecute 'serial killer' Cat lovers have set up a fund to offer a HK$2,000 reward to anyone who supplies information leading to the prosecution of cat abusers. William Fung, a long-time volunteer for cat protection, has already pooled in excess of HK$14,000 with more than 20 like-minded people. They are now targeting a possible serial cat killer in On Ting Estate, Tuen Mun, who has allegedly killed more than 100 cats in eight years. The volunteers collected more than 600 signatures from the estate's residents on Sunday and distributed handbills detailing the HK$2,000 reward. Mr Fung said the cat killer used to strike late at night. After he killed them he hung them in prominent places so everyone could see ... he is really a psycho. Some of the volunteers on the estate once came close to catching the killer in the act, Mr Fung said. He hoped to put the killer in jail and wanted enough money to pursue cat abuse cases across the city. We are disappointed with the police and the government in how they handle animal abuse ... they are only paying lip service. And now we hope to rally the community to keep a close eye on the killer and hand him over to the police. We also wish to educate the young about what is right and what is wrong so that they will learn to respect life. David Wong Kai-yan, chief officer of Animal Earth, said this attempt to catch and punish cat abusers showed the sense of anger and helplessness felt by animal-lovers. I guess most of us feel very frustrated with the current situation - that the police are not making enough efforts to catch those criminals. Though he agreed that offering a reward may raise public awareness, he said it was important to draw the line on what people could and should do. It could be dangerous for us to try and catch the killer on our own. Copyright © 2008. South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd. All rights reserved.
