Guest guest
South China Morning Post By Martin Wong 2008-03-09 Another cat found dead from abuse A cat was found dead, apparently after being abused, in Siu Sai Wan yesterday, where another cat was believed to have been beaten to death by 10 young people earlier last week. Animal Earth chief officer David Wong Kai-yan has described the latest case as a challenge to law and order in Hong Kong. Police said a woman found the brown-and-grey cat lying motionless on a hillside outside Yiu Tsui House in Kai Tsui Court shortly after 2am. That is not far from the hillside outside Hiu Tsui Court, where a black-and-white cat was found dead in a drain on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of 10 people aged between 13 and 25. Workers from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took the second cat away for examination. A police spokesman said: " Initial examination showed the cat's legs were broken. " Police have not ruled out a link between the two cases. " It is sad to see such violent acts against animals so often in Hong Kong, " Mr Wong said. Animal Earth said it would lobby the government to increase the penalty for cruelty to animals, which carries up to three years' jail and a HK$200,000 fine. Police investigated 62 animal abuse cases last year, up from 53 in 2006 and 29 in 2005. Twenty arrests were made.
