You could read such news only from Kerala where members from the august lawmaking body, Govt.officials and the district S.P.C.A. KOLLAM: It was a celebration with a difference at Puthenkulam near here on Wednesday. The elephant calf Sivan, born in captive, turned one year and a grand birthday bash was organised by the Kollam unit of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to celebrate the event. Thirty-year-old Lakshmi had given birth to Sivan on April 2 last year. Puthenkulam Shaji who owns Lakshmi did not know that she was pregnant when he purchased her from Bihar. Mr. Shaji owns a herd of about 20 elephants, most of them tuskers. Savouries for Sivan A big crowd, including a good number of foreign tourists, gathered at Puthenkulam to take part in the celebrations. The fete began with film actor Babu Namboodiri lighting the lamp. The birthday cake was cut by Chathannur MLA N. Anirudhan and he fed Sivan with a jumbo piece. Pathanapuram MLA K.B. Ganesh Kumar garlanded him and SPCA secretary Palazhy Bhaskaran fed Sivan with honey and sugarcane on the occasion. Veterinary Officer of the Forest Department E.K. Easwaran smeared tilak on Sivan's forehead. Chengal Swamy adorned him with a golden shawl. Technical expert of SPCA B.Aravind said that the celebrations were organised as part of promoting captive elephant breeding in the State. Daily intake Sivan will take another year to get fully weaned. But already apart from his mother's milk, he is given a special diet comprising goat's milk, 3 kg rice, 1 kg of wheat-based meal, 1 kg horse gram, 100 grams of jaggery and 50 grams of salt each day.
