regarding the strict directions issued by the foresty Dept.regarding parading of

temple elephants.

Animal rights activist assaulted

V.K. Venkitachalam at Thrissur district hospital on Friday.

 

Thrissur: V.K. Venkitachalam, secretary of the Elephant Lovers Association (Ana

Premi Sanghom) and Public Interest Forum that had been campaigning against

violation of Kerala Captive Elephants Management and Maintenance Rules and

Explosive Rules, was admitted to the district hospital here on Friday after he

was assaulted allegedly by a six-member gang.

In a complaint lodged at the Town East station, Mr. Venkitachalam said a

six-member gang, including two pyrotechnicians, assaulted him at the Thekkinkad

Maidan as he was going to the office of the Special Commissioner of the Cochin

Devaswom Board.

Mr. Venkitachalam told the police that the attackers threatened to kill him if

he continued his campaign.

He sought refuge at the office of the Special Commissioner of the board.

The police arrived and took him to the Town East station and received his

complaint.

A case has been registered against Sasi, a pyrotechnician, on the basis of

Venkitachalam's complaint.

Thiruvambadi Devaswom lodged a complaint with the Devaswom that Venkitachalam

tried to disrupt preparations for fireworks display. On the basis of the

complaint, the police have registered a case against him.
