Guest guest
Just to clarify this newspaper article: Kinakkuaitthala, where these 20 dogs are supposed to have been caught (and presumably killed ) is part of the Venganoor area where ARK has a MOU. This is the area where on 31/1/2008 the secretary of AWBI, Mr. Rajasekar, along with Dr. Chinny Krishna of the Blue Cross and Mr. Babu of SPCA intervened to stop the killing the night before a cull was intended to start. Why has this been reported over 2 and a half months later , so have these dogs been picked up since this date? We have contacted the reporter who said that he was too busy to talk to ARK , we are trying to get an appointment with the editor , we want answers. I live in this area and have heard nothing about any body or any animal being bitten by any rabid dog , this is a small area where every body knows everything that is happening , so I certainly would have been informed if rabid dogs were running around. . The Secretary of the Panchayat has told me that no dog would be killed wilst he is in power , so what has happened? Avis Lyons (founder and director of ARK) English translation from Malaylam newspaper: MALAYA MANORAMA 20 04 08 Rabid dog menace is at its peak stage in places like Sisilipuram, Kattachalkuzhi, Mulluvila and Chavadinada which come under Venganoor Panchayat area. Many people and domestic animals got bitten. Those who got bitten are Beena, her nine year old Anupama, Sreekumar Kanikkudithala and three goats have also been bitten around the area. Around 100 dogs and other domestic animals have also been bitten. Although people have killed the rabid dogs they are worried about the domestic animals that have been bitten, The Panchayat had bought dog catchers from Alleppy and they caught as many as 20 dogs, but some people from Kovalam area threatening the Panchayat against the killing. The officials said the threat was on the basis of the M O U signed between the Panchayat and a foreign lady, during the last Panchayat governing body. The foreign lady, who has been staying in Kovalam for years, claims she has vaccinated and sterilised dogs in this area. Last year when the Health Department from the Corporation tried to catch dogs from the Kovalam area, a group of people attacked them, and some of them were foreign. The police took a case and no action was taken. In the Panchayat areas like Vizinjam and Karumkulam the street dog menace is on the rise. An infant died of dog bite and the last incident was Reshme a girl student who died last week in Karumkulam Panchayat. Note: forwarded message attached. Sent from Mail. A Smarter Email.
