It took the temple officials and the authorities about two hours to control the pachyderm. But by then, three lives had been lost and portions of the temple destroyed. The incident took place around 11.45 am when the elephant, Thiruvalla Unnikrishnan, was being taken out of the temple, where a 10-day festival is on. Unnikrishnan and 17 other elephants were brought here for the festival. On Thursday, they were being led out for feeding after the morning rituals, Thrissur RDO K N Raveendran, said. As the elephant was being led out of the chuttambalam, it grabbed a man from among the waiting devotees and trampled him. Chuttambalam is the area encircling the sanctum sactorum. The elephant then picked up a local woman Kausalya and threw her on the ground, killing her instantly. As it refused to come out of the chuttambalam, some people tried to restrict it inside till help arrived. Nijish, 20, who tried to help control the jumbo, was killed in the process.
