Guest guest
http://www.assamtribune.com/scripts/details.asp?id=may0108\State6 Injured jumbo dies for want of treatment From Our Correspondent DIPHU, April 30 – Due to the apathy and negligence on the part of the forest department the wild elephant which got half stuck in marshy land near Doldoli in the elephant corridor after being hit by a speeding railway engine died after six days at around 2 am on April 26 in Karbi Anglong. The wild jumbo which was hit by an approaching speeding railway engine on April 20 at around 9 am in this elephant corridor and slipped down a steep slope and continued to be half trapped in the marshy land just by the railway track with its hip bones fractured. Despite a team of doctors who visited the spot from Kaziranga National Park the victim jumbo was not administered even a single drop of medicine for reasons best known to them and it was left to suffer in half trapped position in the marshy land. When the DFO West division was contacted he said that the magnitude of injury or cause of its injury is not ascertained and he shifted his responsibility on to the expert doctors of Khanapara saying even a slightest movement may aggravate the situation. The DFO shifted his responsibility to the expert doctors but did not take any trouble to find out any attractive solution to rescue the victim jumbo and left it to groan in half trapped position on the mercy of God. The expert doctors Dr Mohanlal Goldsmith, Assam State Zoo, Dr KK Sharma and Dr Apurba Chakraborty, Khanapara who reached on April 25 evening took six days to reach Karbi Anglong to give medical advice to rescue the elephant. And at last the rescue work started on 25th night when the elephant was pulled out from the marshy land. At last the fate had something for this helpless poor jubmo but it did not live to see the sun of Saturdays morning and died due to its injuries. Even the team of expert doctors said had they reached earlier they could have saved the life of the elephant but the million dollar question is why they did not reach in time from Guwahati. The reasons are best known to the doctors and the Forest department. Expressing deep anger the local people lamented that even during the sixth day the EM i/c forest and environment, KAAC did not visit the spot to oversee the rescue operation. This has created deep resentment among the local people, they said. -- United against elephant polo http://www.stopelephantpolo.com
