Guest guest
Protests against Nepal Monkey Business in Holland, Belgium and UK The World Lab Animal Liberation Week (held from April 20-26) saw a spur of demonstrations against the export of Nepalese rhesys monkeys to US labs. On April 24 Stichting Dierproeven Nederland rallied in front of the Nepalese Consulate in Amsterdam. The demonstrators informed tourists and locals about what is happening in Nepal, 'a paradise-like holiday destination,' where some 300 monkeys are being prepared for a new life in American primate research centers. On April 25 Belgium demonstrators rallied at the Nepal Embassy in Brussels. During a discussion, Ambassador Pramesh Kumar Hamal promised he would do everything possible to stop the breeding of lab monkeys in his country. In the UK a coalition representative met with Mr Jhabindra Aryal, Counsellor/Deputy Chief of Mission of the Nepal Embassy in London on April 22. The representative writes: " We further discussed the issue and Mr Aryal said he received a great deal of correspondence, all of which has been passed on to the Nepalese Government. " " I'm sure that this isn't the public image Nepal wants highlighted, especially when most Nepalese are proud of their spritual hertitage. I wish the new Government will base its policies on ethical democracy rather than on short-term economic gains at the expense of the growing tourist industry. " The campaign against the trade of Nepalese Rhesus monkeys for research is growing, with protests across Europe and in Nepal. The demonstrators have vowed to continue their protests until Nepal cancels the monkey breeding licenses.
