Guest guest
In the past years there has been NO reactions from the State Government of Nagaland following the condemnations, protests, humble letters and media critiicisms on the issue of illegal slaughter/ smuggling- trade / housing of Dogs and sale of Dog meat in the State of Nagaland. It is not something that the State Government, the administration or law enforcing agencies are unaware of. This is one business that is cerried out not candidly anymore but right in the heart of city markets/ bazaars. Packs of Dogs tied inside gunny sacks with mouth wired up are smuggled from the neighbouring states into Nagaland for consumption. In the many years people from all walks of life have raised voice against this barbaric delicacy, but the Nagaland authorities have just not bothered to respond or make an effort to end this illegal trade. It may be noted that a Dog which is on sale in a Nagaland market does not come cheap. The lowest price tag on a Dog is around US$ 40 (equivalent to Rs. 1600/- INR). But of late some good things have been happening as the Assam Police (from neighbouring state of Assam) are nowadays engaged in checking an altogether new form of smuggling. More than 200 dogs were seized from traders in Tezpur (Assam) bound for Nagaland on 2nd May` 2008. It maybe worth to recall that more than eighty dogs of local breed were caught in Khetri, near Guwahati city (Assam) while they were being smuggled to neighboring Nagaland couple of months back. The dogs were then handed to the local wing of People for Animals, the organisation which has been spearheading the fight for the rights of these destitute animals for many years now. Infact the consequence of their prolonged agitation was that early this year the cabinet in Mizoram state (neighbouring Nagaland which also relishes dog meat) took a decision to ban import of dogs from neighboring state and more that 22 shops selling dog meat in the state were pulled down. But we still wait to see the ruthless attitude of Nagaland state on Indian Dogs to die down. May I request upon you all to kindly pen a few lines to the Animal Welfare Board of India to take a firm decision and take this matter before the last Indian Dog vanishes. One very important point to note is that the homeless population of Dogs in Nagaland state is ZERO at the moment. And that of the neighbouring states, specially Assam is decreasing at an alarming rate. You can also write to the Governor, Chief Minister and Chief Secretary of Nagaland. They are in the most powerful positions, and if they wish, they can bring an end to this menace instant. For those in India you can also write to the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of the districts of Kohima and Dimapur. The towns of Kohima (capital of Nagalnd) and Dimapur have the Biggest dog markets in the state. Two examples are the Dog market near Haji Park in Dimapur town, and the Dog Market near Fire station next to the Police Headquarters in Kohima town. Please follow this link to see the shocking pictures of the packs of dogs that were rescued by Assam Police in raids and seizures from traders as they were being smuggled out. Remember these were the few lucky ones to have a cruel barbaric death.
