Re: Asiatic Lion and Gir Forest

Dear Gazala,

The increasing conflicts is mainly due to the spiling over of the population in

the satellite forests and in human inhabited areas. There are indications that

the prey base composition is changing in favor of sambar but overall prey

population has more or less remained same so far. A focused research may help in

answering the questions. WWF has just initiated work to support conservation of

Asiatic lion.

Subject Re: Asiatic Lion and Gir Forest

Dear friends,

Given the escalating number of lion-human conflicts around Gir PA, are there any

efforts being made to quantitatively study:

1. Whether lions have actually started preferring domestic livestock over wild

ungulates? Or are they simply preying more frequently on livestock due to

depletion of their natural prey inside the PA?

2. Whether lions now exceed the carrying capacity of the Gir PA in its current

condition?

3. Is the escalation in conflict also due to shrinking habitat and or

fragmentation in relation to lion numbers?

Whatever be the reason for increasing conflict, the necessity for translocation

of lions to other viable habitats in Gujarat and other states seems to be

getting more urgent by the day. It would be nice to hear from lion biologists

about these issues.

Best,

Ghazala Shahabuddin
