Dear colleagues,

I was recently in Assam on assignment doing a story

on the reintroduction of Pygmy Hogs. During my visit, I was able to meet Ms

Sangeeta Goswami of People for Animals Guwahati and she was kind enough to

take me to the People for Animals shelter. I must say that I was very

impressed with the work of People for Animals Guwahati. The shelter had a

motley of animals; dogs and cats, geese and Muscovy ducks, all living

together as one happy family. In the absence of a driver, Madam drives the

People for Animals ambulance herself and rescues animals on her own! Very

laudable indeed. Good luck to her.

I was also able to go to the Pygmy Hog Breeding centre at Basistha on the

outskirts of Guwahati. The story entailed me interviewing several of my old

colleagues and associates. The Pygmy Hogs are now being released in the wild

in Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary and I hope that the release becomes a

success. There has been a lot of encroachment on the habitat of these

endearing little animals but since these animals were there before the

settlers came in, I feel they should be left in peace. The grasslands of

Assam should always be a safe haven for these enchanting denizens of the

wild.

Best wishes and kind regards,
