WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

Helping organizations in China directly is the best way to do it as

they are in dire need of everything, and volunteers to come to help in the

disaster areas. Added to the injury, they lack basic items we take for granted,

including a Paypal account to receive donations. They have regular bank accounts

which can be found on their websites, or listed below. To help these orgs

receive donations on a timely fashion, The Anti-Fur Society is again offering to

collect donations through its PayPal account and send the lump sum via Western

Union, the most efficient way of sending money to China. If you wish to contact

these organizations directly, you may do so thru their websites below or we can

arrange for you to call them or write.

THE ANIMALS AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

China's earthquake aftermath has taken the lives of a staggering

number of people, estimated to be over 65,000 and over 12 million animals have

perished. Countless dogs and cats are homeless, injured, and starving to death.

Drinking water is polluted and there is a critical need for water pumps to

provide water to animals. Reportedly, there are some 30,000 pet dogs in one

province alone. Many of them now homeless. Since the dog cull has been in

effect, it is questionable if the government will allow rescue to happen.

Nevertheless, rescuers and volunteers are doing all they can to save as many

animals as possible or at least offer them some relief amidst so much suffering.

There is a desperate need for food for companion animals, and livestock feed,

not to mention vaccines and other medication.

Various international agencies are helping in the disaster areas,

including Chinese animal organizations which are greatly underfunded. When

rescues are over, Chinese animal groups will have to continue helping the

animals rescued as a result of this tragedy.

Our group has been working with several groups of animal caring

people in Beijing and Shanghai. They dedicate their spare time and whatever

little money they have to save abandoned animals. It is based on their

recommendation that we are pleased to list here three Chinese animal

organizations who are animal caring pioneers, and are also at the front helping

earthquake victims. It is in great part, thanks to them, that animals in their

areas have experienced care and compassion.

Check them out on " WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP " box.

NEW BEAUTIFUL WORLD

I am very pleased to report my meeting with Dan Z, whom I have been

working with this past year, helping animal groups in China. Through Dan I have

become acquainted with other animal rescuers in China, including the the

Shanghai rescuer of 1400+ cats destined to restaurants in South of China. I

have found out how easy it is to help people who are accomplishing great work

for animals, making it do with very little. I met Dan at the H.S.I. conference

in Orlando this past May 14-17 since she was awarded an internship by the Humane

Society International. It was really great to meet her and also John Wu, a young

veterinarian from Guangzhou where he is trying to build a shelter or some kind

of animal protection agency. Most of us know that Guangzhou is the place where

one of the most infamous live animal market exists, so we plan to maintain

contact with this young man and offer him all the support we can.

Dan was presented with a trapping cage, the best there is, so I am

told: Tomahawk cage for cats and raccoons. It is a collapsible cage with enough

space to trap animals without stressing them. The group receiving this cage is

" The New Beautiful World " a relatively new group in Beijing which has been

responsible for trapping, spaying, neutering, and returning (TNR) at least 2500

cats. Imagine just how many unwanted litters have been prevented by the work of

10 people--most of them young man!

This belongs to someone in the group:

I am also very pleased to say that Scarlett's cats have received a

great boost since they became godfathered by our group. We sent her enough for a

new computer and to spay/neuter/rehome over 60 cats. Additionally, several

people from our group have " adopted " her cats on a monthly basis. She is doing a

fabulous job in taking care of her neighborhood stray cats. Check her out!

Thank you for reading our first newsletter for the Chinese animals!
