1. FROM THE DESK OF HONY. GEN SECRETARY:

First and foremost, I would like to personally thank Roxanne, who took a

lot of efforts to organize a 2 day workshop on animal welfare. I really

enjoyed winning debates on topics like slaughter houses, ABC, cattle

pounds etc. It is a sad fact that my work is not noticed in my own

district (may be intentionally) but neighboring district collectors

certainly call upon me for help. All of us concerned with animal welfare

certainly need to think and take notice of the same. What I would like

to put forth is that there is enough space under the sun for everybody

to do their bit. Always allow others to grow. The final aim should be

animal welfare.

Anyways, I am quite used to the cold -shoulder treatment meted out by

the administration to animal welfare volunteers. But the gleaming ray of

sunlight appears in the form of people, right from melghat to satara who

come to PAWS office to get help from me for their NGO's. If anyone wants

any help, I am always available.

Thank You!

4. SOME NOTABLE FIELD CALLS:

## On 6 th of May, a resident of Wangni village, visited PAWS office

with 2 friends - two soft back turtles which were found in a small water

pond. The pond needed to be closed. PAWS office accepted them, and

arranged the ambulance to transfer them to Bombay SPCA for further

rehabilitation.

## On 12 th May, a Cuckoo which was found injured by a family in Kalwa,

wanted to give it away for further rehabilitation. PAWS picked-up the

cuckoo & sent it to Thane SPCA for further rehabilitation.

## PAWS secretary received a call from its volunteer Ms. Devika Mundkur,

regarding a female Doberman dog which they had rescued from the streets

of Pune, and had kept it in Pune SPCA. The vet at SPCA suggested

euthanasia for the dog as she was suffering from Virginal cancer which

cannot be treated. Secretary was quite disturbed to hear this as we at

PAWS get operated many such cases & remove the growth. The operated dogs

are fine & happy. PAWS Secretary along with volunteers Ms. Crystal

Fernandes and Mr. Aashim Maske drove the ambulance all the way to Pune

to rescue the dog on 21 st May 2008. Then the dog was taken to Sucheta

Vishwanathan - Animal Farm Trust in Pune. When the vet at her facility

checked the dog, they found the dog did not have Cancer growth but

instead had a tumor. They operated on the Doberman on Tuesday, 27 th

May, now the Doberman is recuperating at her facility. It is indeed sad

that the Pune SPCA functions in such a way and gives wrong diagnosis.

Apart from this, two ambulance from PAWS rescue & treat injured animals

every day in Thane district. To know about our last year's rescue work,

secretary regarding the controversial 'Vodafone Pug Ad'. Nilesh gave his

views & appealed the listeners to adopt an 'Indian Dog' instead of

hybrid pedigree dogs which are less suitable for Mumbai's Climate.

8. AWARENESS PROGRAM - ALIBAUG

On Thursday, 22 nd May, I attended a workshop organized by Distrcit

Collector of Raigad Dr. Nipun Vinayak on 'Animal Welfare & Garbage

Control' alongwith 2 PAWS volunteers Ms. Crystal Fernandes & Mr. Aashim

Maske. I was speaker for ABC Rules, Slaughter Houses & Laws, and Stray

Cattle Problem. We also played Beauty without Cruelty video, distributed

Performing animal's awareness brochure & copies of marathi Laws.

There was a huge response for the Workshop. Thanks to Roxanne Conz-Davur

of Terra Anima Trust, who made the workshop possible with her excellent

organizing skills. In Defense of Animals also joined this session in

afternoon. They had a talk on Sterilization & Animal Birth Control

Program by Goodicia Vaidya, Sudnya Patkar & Dr. Guruprasad Mahadik.

Over 120 people attended the workshop, majority of whom were local

policy makers like Corporators, Animal Husbandry, Municipal Health

Officers, Police personnel, Presidents of Municipal councils & CEO's.

Roxanne taught about Banning plastic on beaches, pony & horse carts, and

Garbage control. On the second day, the topics for the workshop were

Vermi-culture, Compost, Medical Waste, Nutrition Management,

Rag-pickers, Urban Waste Management, Rain-Water Harvesting & Solid Waste

Management including E-Waste (Electrical Waste).

We hope the workshop will come out with concrete results & mainly stop

Bullock cart races which already banned by high-court. The collector's

interest & participation was amazing.

9. SOCIETY PET DOGS / STRAY FEEDING ISSUES:

## Animal Lover Mr. Arif called PAWS when he spotted a pet owner, who

was hitting other dogs with stick and also encouraging his pets to

attack small puppies. On 9th May, one such pup died due to attack from

the pet dogs. Mr. Arif has photo evidence of the same. People argued

with the pet Owner. Finally PAWS wrote a stern letter to him copying it

to Ramnagar Police Station. The PSI called secretary Nilesh to know

about laws. The pet owner was then called to the police station & action

was taken against him.

## PAWS volunteer Neha Surve owns a small pomerenian pup in her house;

the society objected to keeping the pet although there is no such

society rule. Some society members even threw stones at Neha, and then

she called PAWS. Again we wrote a very stern letter to her society

committee and the matter was resolved amicably.
