*Rhino crusader goes international*

One of the most visible faces of " save the rhino " campaign in Assam is ready

to take his crusade beyond Indian shores.

Bibhab Talukdar, who waged a relentless battle against poachers, has been

offered a position in the Internat ional Rhino Foundation, and needless to

say, he has accepted it.

Talukdar, in fact, will be the first person from India to the join the

international foundation dedicated to conser vation and research on the

endangered species.

" It is my pleasure to announce that Talukdar will join the Interna tional

Rhino Foundation as the Asian rhino co-ordinator this month. The position

has been slightly reconfigured to include both Southeast and South Asian

rhino range states, " Susie Ellis, executive director of International Rhino

Foundation, said in a statement.

She said Talukdar would split his time between Indonesia and India, working

full time in Indonesia for four months a year and the other eight months in

India.

Of course, he will continue to support Aaranyak, an NGO dealing with

environment, where he worked as the secretary general.

Talukdar, in fact, had always helped the state by bringing in funds from

across the world to save rhinos.

" The new position with the foundation will give me an opportunity to

increase my area of work in the international arena. This is an added

responsibility and not to mention the challenges of working with Javan and

Sumatran rhino conservation in Southeast Asia. I have accepted the position

to offer my contribution towards conservation of three Asian rhino species, "

he said.

Does this show Indians are only India centric? I ask because a lot of

complaints have arisen regarding this, including those from the AAPN

moderator. Regards.

Kindly ignore such invalid comments.

There is always a connection between the nations and the various issues

involving animals.

I challenge those who have passed such invalid comments to provide facts and

point out any issue which has been debated on AAPN of not having any

international value.

I am no way trying to sound a patriotic Indian but it is very important that

we all CONNECT, or rather explore ways and means in helping each other in

trying to CONNECT the links/ issues (even if they are remote) so that it

somehow benefits the animals or the animal people of their own country (not

necessarily the animals that their organsiation can afford to look after).

You have to have a BIG HEART in order to be able to respect all species or

else we only can go down like the Central Zoo Authority of India -R

(Racists).

Dear Edwin,

Sure, would be glad to. For quite some time now there

have been indications from various quarters that Indians are cluttering AAPN

with messages that are of interest only to Indians. Even John has spoken out

on this. But I respectfully disagree with the contention. And this man,

Bibhab Talukdar's achievement is a good example.

He comes from a very disturbed region of the world, a region variously

described as remote, dangerous and similar adjectives. I recently met him on

the eve of his journey to Tanzania for an IUCN Rhino Specialist Group

meeting. He was eagerly telling me how he wanted to tell the Africans about

the Asian species of Rhinos. And now he has been offered this position in

Indonesia where he will be working to save Indian/Nepali, Javan and Sumatran

Rhinos. Using his regional and local expertise and message of conservation,

he is now helping foreign animals.

A similar case can be made regarding AAPN messages from Indians. Agreed,

many Indian messages on AAPN are of local interest. But they provide

pointers for wider international cooperation and pooling of resources. And

in more than one case regional Indian messages posted on AAPN have

highlighted broader issues.

Critics of too many Indian messages should consider this. If a man from a

strife torn Indian state can lead the effort to save Asian Rhinos, why can't

optimum use be made of regional Indian messages to address issues of wider

Asian/international importance?

That's what I meant when I compared Bibhab Talukdar's individual efforts

with those of Indian members of AAPN.

Best wishes and kind regards,

Edwin Wiek is one Great Person who has proved what can be achieved by

CONNECTING.

He came all the way from Thailand with a Nine member Thai TV crew with a

mission to address two BIG issues that were of concern to India , Thailand &

Indonesia.

It was this animal exchange planned between the Assam State Zoo and Thailand

Zoological Association.

The animals to be swapped were Indian One Horned Rhino from Assam and

Orangutans, Stump tailed Macaques and Snow leopards.

A lot of outburst, protest and complaints could not have averted this

exchange without the presence of Edwin here.

He came, met with the Zoo Director, the Forest Minister explained them how

Orangutans are being smuggled out of their native habitat Indonesia and that

Thailand hardly has any of their own and that this deal could well turn out

illegal.

He helped the Thai TV crew film a documentary on the Rhinos and their

habitat at Kaziranga (this filming was dome with the special permission of

the Forest Minister of Assam as the Park was closed for visitors that time).

The film highlighted the aspect that how unscientific it would be for

Thailand to have plucked out the Rhino from the grasslands of Kaziranga into

their country.

End result - the deal was scrapped.

We hope to see more CONNECTION VICTORIES from Edwin in the future for

wildlife conservation.

Cheers !!

Namaste ,

I think I have been reading every message posted here of late (yes, it¹s

gotten that slow) and I have not noticed anything indo-centric about the

correspondence, although I never even thought about it until just mentioned.

Experiences from India directly relate to the going¹s on in Nepal, as we are

very close in many ways. More importantly, experiences from this part of the

world must be made public to the more ³developed² parts. Animal welfare in

the under-developed third and fourth worlds is the battlefront, or the

spearhead to progress and improvement world-wide. We all can see how every

country is connected in this movement, as many of the endangered and now

captive animals come from the ³poorer² and underdeveloped parts of this

globe.

Its an interesting thought: how the economics of human development

contribute (or not) to lives within the animal world. How the flow of

natural resources and goods (including zoo animals and animal parts) go from

remote regions to areas of population and wealth. China and India are prime

examples. So what happens in India in regards to helping animals has a

direct but often obscure impact on the lives of animals living abroad.

So I say bring it on. Saving a monkey or two at small temple in the

backwaters of the world may have a butterfly effect and shut down a

bio-terror-research facility in the USA that is currently torturing their

brethren with electro ejaculation (see www.stopmonkeybusiness.org for more

info on that.)

Cheers,

Jigs
