'Stray' cases*

The capital appears to be losing its patience with " stray " visitors.

The civic body last week " rounded up " not criminals but stray cattle

loitering around in the city.

In all, 150 such " unwanted guests " were caught over two days while they were

having a " leisurely stroll " on some of the busiest thoroughfares. The MCD's

cattle-catching teams, accompanied by police, picked up the strays from

Shahdara, Najafgarh, Civil Lines and Karol Bagh.

August this year. Gurnam Singh, 60, was attacked and killed by a stray

cow in north-west Delhi. Three people tried to save him but they were also

injured by the cow.

" It was indeed an unfortunate incident. The stray cow, as we learnt later,

was agitated because she had lost her new-born calf and because of some

disturbance nearby attacked Gurnam Singh. The police have registered a case

against the cattle owner for letting it out, " MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur

told IANS Thursday.

" The drive against stray cattle is a big exercise. Although we have

initiated drives seeking help from people to catch stray cows, there has

been a lot of resistance, " he said.

Blaming the police for not being there when help is required, Mathur said

there have been times when MCD's trucks have been damaged and their staff

beaten up by cattle owners when their cows, which were roaming free, were

picked up.

" Cattle owners constantly resist when their straying cows are picked up by

us from the roads. There have been many instances of violence when we have

sedated stray cattle, " he said.

" But we are hopeful that we will meet our target of ridding the capital of

stray cattle by August this year. We are doing our best, " said Mathur.
